HILLSPEAKING
from The Anglican Digest, ADVENT 1998

Our 40th Anniversary Year

A CALL FROM A retiring priest who is moving from Florida to Oregon. Aletter from a twenty-two-year-old primary school teacher in Malawi. A callfrom a graduate student in New Jersey. A postcard from an Episcopalian in Maine. A letter from a Third Order Franciscan in India. A call from a bishop in Washington State. A letter from a prison chaplain in Vermont.
All have one thing in common: OPERATION PASS ALONG.
The brain child of the Father Founder and implemented by the late Wynne Hensel, a volunteer worker and long time resident at Hillspeak, OPERATION PASS ALONG solicits books and cassettes from those who no longer want or need them and passes them along to anybody who wants them. No charge is made for the books or cassettes but SPEAK asks that the recipient pay a postage and handling charge if possible. Many donees send more than the requested amount and the extra is used to send books to Third World countries, prisons, and seamen's missions.
In its quarter-century-plus service to the Church, Pass Along has received more than 105,000 books and passed along more than 93,000. Booksare passed along on a first-come, first-served basis and a running list of requests that cannot immediately be filled is maintained. At present that list comprises 750 requesters, individuals and organizations, and 3,653 title requests. Requests are kept on file for a year from date of entry and may be renewed.
Books or cassettes have been passed along to donees in all fifty states and in 24 countries outside the United States. Also, books or cassettes have been passed along to five seamens missions and the American Merchant Marine Library Association, and to twelve state prisons, some to prison chaplains and some to those inmates who are allowed to receive books directly.
